HI-Chicago is very close to Lake Michigan and within walking distance of Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, the Art Institute, Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium. Our neighborhood is safe, fun and easy to get to from anywhere in Chicago. Activities from the hostel include free walking tours and excursions throughout the city. Spring 2013 Events

  

April 27: National Day of Puppetry.  Irish American Heritage Center.  4626 N Knox Ave.  Show begins at 11:00 a.m., $5 suggested donation.

 

May 25: Chicago Memorial Day Parade.  State St from Lake St to Van Buren.  The Chicago Memorial Day Parade honors all men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country.

 

May 27-August 29:  Millennium Park Music Series: Downtown Sound: New Music Mondays.  Cutting-edge indie rock and pop music.  Loops and Variations: a series of six concerts that mix new music with electronica.  Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz: showcasing jazz with a distinctively Chicago flavor.  See www.millenniumpark.org for schedule.

 

May 31-June 2: Millennium Art Festival.  Lake Street at Michigan Ave.  The 5th annual Millennium Art Festival is free to the public, showcasing the original art of approximately 150 artists.  Live music and food!  11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

June 6-9: Chicago Blues Festival.  The Chicago Blues Festival is the largest free blues festival in the world and remains the largest of Chicago's music festivals.

 

June 29: Gold Coast Art Festival.  Butler Field in Grant Park.  The Gold Coast Art Fair is heralded as the "Granddaddy of American Art Festivals" and is rated as one of the top 30 shows in the nation by Sunshine Artist magazine.  Now celebrating its 56th year, the Gold Coast Art Fair is the third oldest and by far one of the most well-attended art festivals in Chicago.  10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., free admission.

 

June 27-September 15: Chicago SummerDance.  (Thursdays-Sundays).  Grant Park.  For eleven weeks each summer, the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park blossoms into an urban dance space.  The series offers an introductory one-hour dance lesson by professional instructors followed by two hours of live music and dancing.

 

July 10-14: Taste of Chicago.  Grant Park.  Taste of Chicago is the nation's premier outdoor food festival showcasing the diversity of Chicago's dining community.  The delicious array of food served at Taste of Chicago is complemented by music and exciting activities for the entire family.

Free Breakfast!

All guests receive free breakfast from 7:00am to 10:00am in the large dining area.  The breakfast buffet includes toast, croissants, bagels, muffins, waffles, cheese, cereal, fruit, coffee, tea and juice.  Travelers at HI-Chicago can begin their Chicago adventure with a good breakfast and a great opportunity to meet other hostellers and swap suggestions for the day ahead.

Free WiFi!

Do you travel with a WiFi enabled laptop, pda, phone or other gadget?  The entire common area on the 2nd floor of the hostel has free internet access through WiFi. Coverage extends through the lobby, library, meeting rooms and dining area. If you don't have your own computer, the hostel has internet kiosks for you to use for $6/hour.
