Until Justice Rolls Down Like Water

Deadline Extended to October 14th!

Hostelling International Chicago, in collaboration with The Peace Museum and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is once again hosting annual competition for art students in Chicago honoring the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Student artists will be selected to paint individual pieces on the 2nd floor windows of Hostelling International Chicago. The theme of the exhibit is "Until Justice Rolls Down Like Waters," and will bea consideration of the life and work of Dr. King and the continuing struggle for social justice today. Each artist will have three glass windows for their work and each set of windows is separated from others by a column.

First, Second and Third Place Prizes will be awarded based on realization of the theme, technical merit and creativity. Jurors from Hostelling International Chicago, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and past Competition prizewinners will evaluate the final artwork to determine the prizewinners.

Submission Process

Students must submit a portfolio of up to 10 images of recent work along with the submission form in person or by mail by October 14, 2009. Portfolios should be brought to the hostel at 24 E. Congress Parkway between 9am and 5pm, and can be collected from the same location after October 16, 2009. Portfolios may also be submitted electronically to asemmel@hichicago.org.

Artists selected to create paintings for the window will be notified by October 16, 2009. Artists must submit a draft of their intended mural on or before December 18, 2009.

Other details

Artists may begin painting their work on the windows on January 2, 2010 and must complete their work on or before January 13. All murals should be contained within the area of the glass and no painting should occur on window sills, frames, etc. All  murals must be executed in tempera paint that can be easily removed. Tempera paint and brushes will be provided by the hostel.

The paintings will be on display January 18 through March 31, 2010. Artists are welcome to document their work during that time. Artists are encouraged to participate in the exhibit de-installation in April.

Public Viewing

An artists' reception will be held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 18, 2010 from 5pm to 7pm. The artists will describe their work and the winners of First, Second, and Third Place Prize will be announced. The event is free and open to the public.

The "Until Justice Rolls Down Like Waters" exhibition will be on display from January 18- March 31, 2010, at Hostelling International Chicago, 24 East Congress Parkway. The exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing between 9am and 9pm, seven days a week.
