Hostels provide friendly, inexpensive overnight accommodations for travelers of all ages. Guests stay in multi-bedded, male or female designated dorm rooms (a limited number co-ed rooms are also available upon request), and receive bed linens and a towel upon check-in. Most hostels offer fully equipped self-service kitchens, dining areas, secure storage and common rooms for relaxing and socializing with other travelers. All Hostelling International hostels assure travelers quality standards for cleanliness, security and service.
HI-Chicago offers its guests shared accommodations which include dorm rooms with bunk beds. Guests are assigned their own bed and share dorm rooms with other hostellers. Dorm rooms are designated as male or female. However, men and women traveling together may request to stay in a co-ed room, if available. Each dorm bed is outfitted with a Custom Bed Oasis featuring a privacy barrier, personal locker, shelf, charging station and individual lamp. Don’t forgot your lock.
You can make a reservation up to 24 hours prior to your arrival under the Reservation section on this website or by calling HI-Chicago. To secure your reservation you will need a valid Visa or MasterCard. Reservations are not required, however they are recommended.You can also contact the hostel directly for same reservation. No, a credit card is used to guarantee your reservation.
There is maximum stay of 14 nights per guest per calendar year.
Yes, each guest must have a government issued photo ID such as a passport, U.S. driver’s license, state/provincial or national identity card, military service card, or alien registration card. Hostelling International membership cards are required for member discounts. Unfortunately we cannot accept ISIC cards, school and university IDs as valid forms of identification.
Yes. If you are not a member of Hosteling International, you will be charged a daily membership fee of $3 per day. You can also purchase an annual membership at check-in, or purchase one online.
Check-in is 4:00 p.m. and check out is at 11:00 a.m. HI-Chicago is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you arrive prior to your room being ready we are happy to store your luggage. Guests with departures after the 11:00 a.m. check-out can use the lockers to store luggage only on the day of departure. There are no long term storage facilities at HI-Chicago.
HI-Chicago is open to guests of all ages. Guests under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Groups with guests under 18 years, booked through HI-Chicago’s group sales department, must be accompanied by a chaperone.
No. Sleeping bags are prohibited at HI-Chicago due to Chicago public health regulations. HI-Chicago provides all guests with complimentary linen and towels during their stay.
Cancellations may be made at no charge up until 23:59 ET the night before you arrive. Reservations cancelled after 23:59 ET prior to the day of arrival will be charged for the first night’s stay. Please call 312-360-0300 to cancel.
Yes. Breakfast is continental with a choice of bagels, muffins, cereal, fruit and orange juice or coffee.
Yes. Dorm rooms do not have phones, but messages can be left at the front desk.
The hostel does not have its own parking lot, but there are a number of elevated parking garages and open air lots within 2 blocks of the hostel. 
Yes. HI-Chicago has coin operated washing machines and dryers, along with irons and ironing boards.

Group questions

Groups of 10 or more pay $30 and up per person per night (plus tax). Hostel staff and volunteers offer itinerary assistance and special discounts to museums and attractions as part of our service to groups.
The hostel has 8-bedded rooms with ensuite bathrooms and 10-bedded rooms with shared hall bathrooms. Group members are placed into the rooms based on group preference, room availability and rate.
If your group has members under the age of 18, no other hostellers will be in the rooms with you. If your group is 18 or older, hostel staff make an effort to keep your group together but cannot guarantee that your group members will be in rooms by themselves.
HI-Chicago has a limited number of private rooms, based on availability. A room consists of 2-4 beds along with a private bath and shower. The rate is $130/night (plus tax).
A deposit of 50% of the total amount due is required to secure a reservation. The remaining amount is due 30 days before arrival. Cancellation of your group reservation must be received in writing at least 30 days prior to scheduled arrival to receive a full refund. Reservations cancelled within 30 days of arrival will forfeit the cost of one night of the group reservation equal to the number in group times the rate for one night. Reservations cancelled or reduced 21 business days, or less, prior to the scheduled arrival, receive no refund. HI-Chicago reserves the right to cancel reservations that are not paid in full 30 business days prior to arrival.
Yes. Please make your reservation as soon as possible. Make an estimate of the number of males and females in your group. The final breakdown must be confirmed no later than three weeks before arrival when the balance is due.
No. Your group will receive a complimentary HI-USA Group membership when you make your reservation.
